Sunderland Atkinson Alpha (WBR247) c1990

Sunderland Corporation purchased three Atkinson Alphas in 1963 and 1964,they had Marshalls B45D bodywork and were numbered WBR246 - 8 all were withdrawn by the middle 80's. One of them WBR247 spent many years as a derilict hulk at its final resting place of North.s scrapyard at Sherbern in Elmet near York. It is seen here c1990 amongst other residents of this famous yard.
The Atkinson Alpha was normally a frieght chassis but had been used in Sunderland's case for PSV work. WBR246 and 248 are preserved. WBR248 is well known on the rally field in North East England, but WBR246 has never been seen since. Perhaps someone out there can provide further details?

246 is in a partially restored condition at Keighley Bus Museum, and has been for the past fifteen years or so.

The Alpha was designed as a bus chassis, initially commissioned by North Western Road Car company in 1952. The Sunderland trio were the last built and both numbers 46 and 48 are restored.
